Narratives for a common future?

In an article in the internet journal Baggrund, associate Professor and project coordinator Kirsten Thisted takes us through the historical background of the recent negotiations of the Danish-Greenlandic relation.

The relation has been shaped by emotional as well as political contracts between the two countries and imperial metaphors, such as the caring mother lifting her irrational child into cultural and political adolescence, have proved surprisingly tenacious.

Together with the current Arctic momentum, the old narratives and the way they are currently renegotiated in Greenland sheds light on the complexity of the discussions of a possible sovereign Greenlandic state.
